GENERAL INFORMATION

Birth records are confidential for 75 years from the date of the event.

Death records are confidential for 25 years from the date of the event.

Birth and death certificates may be issued to immediate family members--mother, father, brother, sister, parent, grandparent or child.  While a grandparent may obtain their grandchild's record, a grandchild cannot obtain their grandparent's record without providing proof of a direct tangible need for the record.   In addition, a certificate may be obtained by a legal guardian, legal representative of the family, and organizations or governmental agencies that have a direct tangible need for the record.

A certified copy of a birth or death certificate can be obtained in person, by mail request, or online using VitalChek.

A current government-issued picture identification is required to obtain a certified copy.

Acceptable forms of valid identification include:

  • Driver's license

  • State ID

  • US Passport

  • Military ID

  • Visa

Contact the appropriate City Hall if the birth or death occurred in any of the cities during the dates listed below. Tarrant County Vital Records can only provide an abstract copy of these birth records and has no access to the death records.

  • Arlington from 1971 to the present.

  • Grapevine from 1973 to the present.

Birth certificate fees are $23 for each copy.

Death certificate fees are $21 for the first copy and $4 for each additional copy when purchased at the same time.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES

Birth certificates are issued in two forms--full copies or abstract copies.

Full copies will always be issued if the County Clerk's office is the holder of the record.

Out-of-County birth certificates can be obtained in abstract form only. Abstract copies may not be suitable for Passport purposes. Contact the nearest Passport office for more information.

If proper identification is not available, a written notarized affidavit can be presented from a person who is given specific permission to obtain the record. The affidavit cannot be for third party requests. The person who is given permission must complete a separate application and present a valid government-issued ID.

DEATH CERTIFICATES

The Tarrant County Clerk's office cannot issue certified copies of a death record until the funeral home has filed the record with our office.
