Lateral Transfer Program (LTO)

Tarrant County offers a Lateral Transfer Officer (LTO) Program for qualified applicants from other law enforcement agencies. Under this program, Deputy Sheriffs, Detention Officers, and 911 Dispatchers may be considered for higher starting salaries based on prior experience.

Deputy Sheriff Applicants

  • Must be licensed by TCOLE as a peace officer

  • Must be currently employed as a peace officer or supervisor requiring TCOLE licensure at the time of hire*

  • Must have at least two years of current, relevant experience as a TCOLE‑licensed peace officer

  • Must have no major sustained or pending misconduct allegations within the past 24 months

  • Must meet all minimum requirements in the Deputy Sheriff position description

  • Subject to standard background check and hiring process

*Out‑of‑state officers: Must obtain a TCOLE license before applying. Same experience and misconduct requirements apply.

Detention Officer Applicants

  • Must be licensed by TCOLE as a corrections officer

  • Must be currently employed as a corrections officer or supervisor requiring TCOLE licensure at the time of hire*

  • Must have at least two years of relevant experience in a county facility

  • Must have no major sustained or pending misconduct allegations within the past 24 months

  • Must meet all minimum requirements in the Detention Officer position description

  • Subject to standard background check and hiring process

*If not currently employed in a licensure‑required position, applicants must:

  • Have served in that role within the last two years, and

  • Have at least five total years of TCOLE‑licensed experience as a corrections officer in a county facility, and

  • Hold a current TCOLE corrections officer license in good standing.

911 Dispatcher Applicants

  • Must be licensed by TCOLE as a telecommunicator

  • Must be currently employed as a telecommunicator or supervisor requiring TCOLE licensure at the time of hire

  • Must have at least two years of relevant experience as a telecommunicator

  • Must have no major sustained or pending misconduct allegations within the past 24 months

  • Must meet all minimum requirements in the 911 Dispatcher position description

  • Subject to standard background check and hiring process

Training and Salary

  • Employees hired under the LTO program must complete at least eight weeks of field training.

  • Training content and length are set by the division’s Chief Deputy or Executive Chief Deputy of Confinement.

  • Employees start at the hire‑in rate during training. After successful completion, salaries may be adjusted based on experience.

Note: The LTO policy does not affect an employee’s probationary period as defined by the Sheriff’s Office Civil Service Rules.
