Tackling Chronic Disease in Tarrant County with GLP-1 Medications
In Tarrant County, we face a growing burden of chronic diseases, especially obesity and type 2 diabetes. These conditions not only affect quality of life but also increase the risk of heart disease, kidney failure, and dementia. More than 70% of adults in Tarrant County live with at least one chronic condition, making this a major health challenge both locally and nationwide.
Fortunately, a new class of medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1) offers a promising tool to help reverse this trend.
Originally developed to treat diabetes, GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have shown remarkable benefits across multiple health areas. They help regulate blood sugar, promote weight loss, reduce inflammation, and support heart and kidney health. Early research even suggests they may help protect against cognitive decline.
For many patients, GLP-1s can lead to significant weight loss—often 15–20% of body weight. This isn’t just cosmetic; it’s transformative. Lower weight means lower blood pressure, better insulin sensitivity, and less strain on vital organs. To maintain these results, patients typically need to continue with a maintenance dose. Combining medication with healthy habits—such as not smoking, eating a balanced diet, staying active, and limiting alcohol—further boosts long-term success.
Like all medications, GLP-1s can cause side effects. The most common are nausea, vomiting, and constipation, which often improve over time. Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis and gallbladder issues, underscoring the need for medical supervision.
As your Public Health Director, I believe GLP-1s represent a turning point in our fight against chronic disease. We’re working to expand access for eligible residents and educate local providers on their safe and effective use.
If you or someone you know struggles with obesity or diabetes, talk to your healthcare provider about whether GLP-1 therapy may be right for you. Together, we can reduce hospitalizations, improve quality of life, and build a healthier future for Tarrant County.
