Cooling Centers
When temperatures across Tarrant County heat up, residents need help cooling down.
Exposure to even short periods of extreme heat can cause serious health problems. Here is a useful fact sheet on Heat Illness with signs and tips to help cope with the extreme conditions.
Some programs and locations across the county provide air-conditioned facilities during dangerously hot weather. Spending a few hours in an air-conditioned environment can bring down the body's core temperature and make it easier to handle the heat.
Older and/or frail adults, homeless people, parents with small children and persons with health conditions should consider spending time in a cooling center. The best time is 1-5 p.m. when temperatures are typically at their highest.
Cooling centers may also have water and other liquids available to protect against dehydration. Some allow pets as well, but you should check first before arriving with your animal.
