Summary: The Ruby Thompson Shemwell (family) Collection consists of materials relating to Ruff H. Shemwell’s (1907-1987) long career with Southwestern Greyhound Lines and Ruby Thompson Shemwell’s (1910-1999) experience as a nurse. Mr. Shemwell began his career with Southwestern Greyhound Lines in 1934 -- just one year after the company was established. During his work as a dispatcher in San Antonio, Texas, Shemwell was awarded an eight year safety award. He was transferred to the Fort Worth General Office in 1944, where he worked in the operating department as chief clerk until he was promoted to Director of Personnel in 1952. Shemwell continued his work with the company until his retirement in 1971. During Shemwell’s time with the company, Southwestern Greyhound Lines became one of the major bus transportation companies in the United States. Its headquarters were in Fort Worth, Texas, and served a total of nine states covering 7,238 route miles.
