Extra Territorial Jurisdictions
Extra Territorial Jurisdictions
Extra Territorial Jurisdictions (ETJs) are areas surrounding city limits where municipal governments can enforce their regulations, even if the land lies outside city boundaries. In such cases, the platting process dictates that regulations for both the city and the County must be met for approval. In Tarrant County, the cities of Azle, Crowley, Fort Worth, Haslet, Kennedale and Mansfield have ETJ areas.
Landowners or developers may choose to remove their property from a city's ETJ, a process done through the city. If this is done, a release letter from the city is submitted to the County and platting regulations would only need to be met for the County.
Once approved, plats are then recorded with both the city and the county clerks. In cases where ETJ release was requested, plats are recorded with the county clerks.
