The Civil Division of the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney's Office acts as General Counsel for Tarrant County and its elected or appointed officials, providing legal advice. These officials include the Commissioners' Court, the sheriff, the district and county clerks, the county auditor, and the purchasing agent, among others. This team of prosecutors advise these officials on the legal aspects of their governmental obligations. Civil attorneys represent and defend Tarrant County and its officials in all aspects of civil litigation. Practice areas include, but are not limited to, personal injury, property damage, civil rights, contracts, collections, condemnations, employment law, and bail bond forfeitures in both state and federal trial and appellate courts.
The Civil Division assists victims of family violence in obtaining protective orders. These orders place limitations on the ability of individuals to abuse you, your family or pets. Civil prosecutors also represent the State of Texas in obtaining involuntary commitments of persons who have not committed a crime but have been diagnosed by two physicians as having a mental condition that will pose a threat to themselves or someone else.
Finally, civil attorneys represent the Department of Family and Protective Services (formerly, CPS) in cases where abuse or neglect are alleged and court intervention is sought. These civil suits include termination of parental rights, adoption, and suits that affect the custody of children.
