Health Classes Offered
Chronic Disease Prevention (CDP) currently offers many free classes and programs, both in-person and virtual, with a focus on prevention and management of chronic diseases. When resources allow, CDP can also provide health screenings, such as for blood pressure and Body Mass Index, and literature to individuals, groups and organizations.
Regarding classes sponsored by Tarrant County Public Health:
- A minimum of 10 participants are required for each class requested.
- Youth participants in the requested class must be in the same age range to optimize the learning experience.
- We do not provide classes for children under age six.
- Classes are usually held between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Please submit requests at least six weeks prior to the desired class date in order to have best staff availability.

Community Outreach services

Current class offerings:
- Alzheimer’s 10 Warning Signs, Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body
Tarrant County Public Health CDP educators provide awareness education in collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association. The 10 Warning Signs class provides information to help you better understand Alzheimer’s, tips to approaching someone about memory concerns, importance of early detection and benefits of diagnosis. The Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body class focuses on the four ways to keep your brain healthy: cognitive activity, physical exercise, diet/nutrition and social engagement.
- Asthma Prevention
This class explains what asthma is, the changes that occur to the airways, common “triggers” of asthma and ways to reduce or eliminate them.
- Diabetes Awareness ((for 10 - 12 year olds)
A four-lesson program for children that explains diabetes, risk factors, prevention, common symptoms and how the disease affects the body.
- Diabetes Prevention
Learn the basics about diabetes, how diabetes affects your body, its signs & symptoms, risk factors and ways to help prevent or delay getting diabetes or its complications. Various education formats are available that emphasize preventing Type 2 Diabetes. Public Health awareness efforts include Community Outreach as well as education classes. We work closely with the Tarrant County Diabetes Collaboration when needed to provide instructors. All classes are taught by a Certified Health Education Specialist, a Health Educator or a Certified Diabetes Educator.
- Health For Me (Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (6 weeks)
Addresses chronic disease self-management. Participants meet for 2 1/2 hours weekly, and through various skill building activities, learn and practice positive ways to cope with theirs, or a loved one’s illness.
- Healthy Sleep
Provides tips on how to get restful, quality sleep. Also, discusses why good sleep is important and the ways poor sleep directly impacts our physical and mental health and overall wellness.
- Heart Health Awareness*
This class provides the factors and conditions that affect the heart, such as blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, tobacco use and more. Also provides important information related to heart attack, cardiac arrest and stroke.
- How To Talk To Your Healthcare Provider General (women only)
We provide information on the importance of "building bridges" between you and your provider and to make the most of your healthcare visit to include planning and effective communication. Also discussed are the roles and responsibilities of both provider and you, as the patient..
- Hypertension Basics
Learn about hypertension, how it affects your body, its signs, symptoms and risk factors. Learn ways to help prevent or delay developing high blood pressure and its complications.
- Kids Growing Healthy (Series class for fifth grade students) (link to page)
Geared toward 5th grade students in Tarrant County, this program offers five free, interactive sessions and a two-to three-month follow-up evaluation to identify positive changes in daily nutrition and physical activity behaviors. Topics include: reading food labels, eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, limiting sedentary activities and getting adequate physical activity daily.
- Live Tobacco Free (4 weeks, for adults)
This four session, interactive, supportive tobacco cessation program focuses on helping you discover your reasons for quitting, patterns of tobacco use, development of a quit plan, strategies to overcome cravings, stress management strategies and more.
- Living with Asthma
Learn about asthma triggers and the levels of asthma warning signs. Also discussed are both preventative and rescue treatments, additional methods to manage asthma symptoms and the importance of creating an asthma action plan.
- Living with Diabetes
You will learn about the importance of glucose monitoring, A1c testing and ways to prevent or reduce the risk of complications. Also discussed are factors that can affect glucose levels, ways to prepare for/ handle sick days and self-management strategies.
- Living with Heart Disease*
We will discuss the most common forms of heart disease, heart attack vs. cardiac arrest signs/symptoms, the importance of having a heart attack survival plan and the American Heart Association’s “Life’s Simple 7” strategies to reducing heart disease related complications.
- Living with Hypertension
You will learn about what blood pressure reading numbers mean and why both are important. Also discussed is the importance of self-care through stress management, the DASH diet, regular physical activity, proper monitoring and tracking, plus much more.
- Men’s Health
Provides a detailed overview of men's health issues, along with a question-and-answer session to help men better understand the action they need to take to protect and improve their health.
- Move & Groove (Physical Activity)
Provides fun, creative ways to incorporate more physical activity and exercise into your day and the many physical and mental health benefits. Also, provides the components of a balanced exercise program and examples of each. Participation in activities is optional and all ages are welcome.
- Nutrition (Fruits and Veggies)
This is a Tarrant County Public Health initiative to educate consumers about the benefits of incorporating a wide and colorful array of fruits and vegetables into their daily diets. Also covered is how many servings are recommended daily as well as helpful tips of adding them into your diet.
- Nutrition (Label Reading)
Can you look at a Nutrition Facts label and know if you are getting too much fat, sodium, or sugar from the pre-packaged foods that you eat? If not, this class is perfect for you. This class will review how to read a Nutrition Facts label to help with food choices, portion control and chronic disease prevention and management.
This class is intended for those at risk for developing this major health problem. Learn the symptoms and risk factors for bone loss, and things you can do to delay or prevent it from developing.
- Skin Cancer Prevention
Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and is largely preventable. In this class you will learn what causes skin cancer, signs/symptoms, who is at higher risk and prevention strategies. Also covered is the importance of early detection and how to perform skin self-examinations.
- Stress Awareness and Management for Physical Health
This presentation increases awareness of sources of stress and the health and well-being benefits of physical activity apart of our daily lives in the management and reduction of stress.
- Tobacco Awareness (for grades 5-12)
Participants learn how and why tobacco use, including e-cigarettes/vape, affect one’s physical and mental health. This class is designed to prevent tobacco usage among Tarrant County youth.
- Weighing on Wellness (WOW)
We discuss the current overweight/obesity rates, factors that impact our weight, methods to monitor/measure body weight status and the importance healthy nutrition and regular exercise have on weight management.
