Benefits for Survivors of Veterans

When a veteran dies the survivors of the veteran may be eligible for a number of federal, state and other miscellaneous benefits.  Listed below are some of those benefits with eligibility and criteria information as well as who to contact to get more information. 
 
In addition, when a veteran dies, survivors of the veteran should immediately report the veteran's death to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service at 800-321-1080 if the veteran was a military retiree and receiving a military retirement check.  If the veteran was receiving a payment from the VA of any kind, survivors should contact the VA immediately at 800-827-1000 to cancel any payments/benefits the veteran was receiving.
